his is one of three paintings that Artemisia provided for the renovation of a cathedral at Pozzuoli. The scene is a relatively solemn, subdued work for Artemisia, but quite appropriate for a liturgical painting. The male figures seem disproportionally large compared with the dignified Madonna and child dwarfed at left.
The Artist's Life.
rtemisia collaborated with Massimo Stanzione, a Neapolitan emulator of Caravaggio who had moved to Naples around the same time as Artemisia. Although Stanzione was eight years her senior, it appears that she influenced his style.
