Casa Buonarroti Galleria, Florence.
rtemisia contributed to the decoration of the Casa Buonarroti Galleria by painting this panel. She earned a high commission for so young and inexperienced a painter. In a more moralistic era, Il Volterrano, a contemporary Florentine fresco artist added drapery for modesty.
The Artist's Life.
rtemisia came to Florence from Rome, soon after she married a Florentine artist, Pietro Antonio di Vincenzo Stiattesi in late 1612, at a time when the sensation caused by the rape trial was still hurtful.
Artemisia was friends with the controversial astronomer and mathematician Galileo and with Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger, great-nephew of his famous namesake. It was Buonarroti who helped launch her career in Florence.
In 1616, she and her husband became official members of the Academie del Disegno (Academy of Design), an unprecedented honour for a woman. She had many patrons, including Grand Duke Cosimo II of the powerful Medici Family.
