1635

Oil on canvas

1.84m by 2.58m

Museo del Prado, Madrid.

The Painting.

An unusually domestic image, this tranquil scene is dominated by female figures, who traditionally controlled birthings. The solitary elderly male resembles a model that Caravaggio posed in paintings.

The Artist's Life.

Artemisia and her household were now well established in Naples by 1635. Although there was demand for her artistry, she was often short of money and composed letters begging for commissions. She painted other versions of Lucretia and Cleopatra around this time.
