The Painting.
t is difficult to date this painting.
Several similar reclining nudes by her father and others date to the early
1620s, but Garrard feels that the Neapolitan style of the background suggests the 1630s, when Artemisia resided in Naples. Bissell dates it several years earlier.
The Artist's Life.
rtemisia lived in Naples for most of the rest of her life,
except for her time in England with her dying father. Naples the largest and wealthest city
in southern Europe and her move there would have been largely for economic reasons.
