The Painting.

The painting is sometimes titled as "Fame", but the absence of certain symbols associated with Fame suggest that this more likely be Clio, the muse of History. Artemisia's name and the year 1632 are visible on the open book at left.

The Artist's Life.

At Naples, a city three times larger than Rome, Artemisia had access to wealthy patrons and art collectors. Caravaggio, who had lived in Naples in 1606-1607, introduced northern artists to the Neapolitans.
